Christina Gahn

Welcome!

I am a pre-doctoral research fellow at the Department of Government at the University of Vienna

Also, I am a PhD candidate in political science at the Berlin Graduate School of Social Sciences at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. In my dissertation, I study the use, success and efficiency of tailoring and targeting in election campaigns in multi-party democracies in Europe.

From 2020 to 2022, I was a pre-doctoral research fellow at the Chair of Comparative Politics at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Before that, I studied at the University of Vienna and the Vienna University of Economics and Business. In that time, I worked as a research and teaching assistant at the University of Vienna.

My research interests include political parties and party competition, electoral campaigns and political communication.

How much tailoring is too much? Voter backlash on highly tailored campaign messages.

April 2024

My first (single-authored) dissertation paper has been accepted at The International Journal of Press/Politics and will be published soon!

New publication

Should we include margins of error
in public opinion polls?

December 2023 - February 2024

New publication in the European Journal of Political Research. Using a large-scale survey experiment, Werner Krause (University of Potsdam) and I investigate whether exposing citizens to margins of error in public opinion polls alters their vote intentions.

For a more general audience, we summarized the core findings in a blogpost at The Loop (in EN) and Verfassungblog (in GER). This research was also discussed in Der Standard, The House Magazine, Deutschlandfunk and the Austrian Parliament.

Dissertation

On target -
The success and use of tailoring in targeted campaign messages.

2023

In my dissertation, I study how tailoring and targeting drive the success and efficiency of campaign messages of political parties and how parties use tailoring and targeting as campaign strategies in multi-party democracies in Europe. I use both observational and experimental quantitative methods, by conducting a factorial survey experiment and a manual content analysis of the Meta Ad Targeting dataset. The cumulative dissertation consists of several papers, which are currenlty in various stages in the publication process.  See here. I plan to submit in autumn 2024.
